- AlexaLeeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm new to this genre but I truly enjoyed this! Lin skilfully crafted a believable world with characters I immediately cared for.
Story
Off to a great start, the pacing was good, the plot was interesting, I'm truly excited to read more. The world that Lin has created is very good. I’m interested in different clans as well as the different Goddesses! Enough detail was given throughout that I felt I understood the world whilst still craving more details.
Style
Again, I think this was good! Some sentences were a little bit too choppy and some more variation in word choice would be great but that can easily be fixed.
Grammar and spelling
A few spelling mistakes throughout as well as some unnecessary commas but overall, fine. Nothing that some light proof-reading wouldn't fix.
Characters
Lin is extremely skilled at creating characters that the reader immediately cares for. From the first line, I cared about Daiyu and her family and this continued throughout. They're realistic, interesting and believable!
Overall, the story was well written and the world well crafted. There were a few mistakes but this absolutely did not detract from what was otherwise a fantastic story! I’m excited to see where it goes, keep it up! - BapperRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a meticulously crafted story. That much is clear from the second you look at it. I knew from the moment I started reading that this author was telling a story they really wanted to tell. First off:
Style: This story is dripping with floral language and vivid scening. As a wannabe writer myself, I was really impressed how gorgeous this story was. The reading process was effortless and extremely pleasureable. I found that a lot of care was put into this story in regards to it's style.
Story: This is where I offer my one caveat for this recommendation. The story is still young. The first act is just now getting going as far as I read, but I see the underpinnings of a really solid and enjoyable Hero's Journey. I'm giving 5 stars under the assumptions that the consistent quality I've seen will translate to an equally solid first story arc.
Grammar: As a grammar nerd, I found that there were very few errors if at all. I can't say for sure that there are no issues, but that none of them stuck out and interfered with the flow of the story and my enjoyment of it (and isn't that all you can really ask for?)
Characters: Now again, I'm circling back to the fact that this is a very young story. That being said, Chen is a really solid protagonist in terms of foundations for the future. There really isn't anything more to say other than I'm eagerly waiting for new chapters as the author is uploading super fast right now. - Ben ArissonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: A really great LitRPG story with lots of potential to captivate and intrigue!
Style: Read the prologue and you'll understand what I mean when I say that the author really knows how to write engaging and dynamic scenes. It's almost seamless the way I was captivated by the action sequences.
Story: The story follows Chen an outcast and cursed soul among his own people as he discovers and comes to terms with his destiny as the chosen of his people's patron goddess. To be honest, I'm not too familiar with Xianxia to comment but I think the author knows what they are doing and I believe were are in good hands. Excited to see where the author takes this.
Grammar: I did note some minor grammatical/word choice issues but nothing that took me out of the story.
Character: I really liked Daiyu and An and it's amazing that I was able to get to care about them in such a short time. Chen seems like a solid protagonist and I'm excited to learn more about him and see where his journey takes him.
Worldbuilding: I think this is a strength of the author in creating a very vivid and fleshed out world with an interesting magic system and lore. Lots of things to learn along the way but the author does a great job of not overwhelming you with too much new info too fast. - D.C.VeilingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Ancients is an expertly crafted example of how a lit-RPG Xiaxia Novel could look like!
What makes this book different: The author has obviously a lot of experience with writing Xianxia stories as his excellent handling of that genre shows. But despite that, neither the characters nor the story is coming short, creating a worthwhile and unique piece of writing for us!
Style Score: as already said, the author knows how to show Xianxia in the best light which is also becoming apparent in the style. It flows very well and is perfectly adapted to work with the Xianxia setting - any fans of the genre will notice that right away from the first chapter. There is nothing awkward or boring, just the right amount of flowery description to paint a vivid picture of the situation and environment - nothing to complain on this side!
Story Score: the story is thrilling from the start, throwing us in the midst of a packing fightscene and the resulting aftermath. In the following chapters we can see a lot of buildup for future developments that make me want to read on and find out what will come of it - very nice world building that promises more to come.
Grammar Score: not much to say here - the few typos I found were edited after someone pointed them out. It is clearly well-maintained and eventual errors are edited out quickly.
Character Score: The characters feel alive and believable. Especially Chen, the MC, is authentic from the start and quickly fleshed out far enough to really relate to him, even in the early chapters! I have no doubt that this will continue for side characters as well as the story goes on.
Overall I can recommend the novel to every Xianxia and litRPG fan, but also those who have not yet ventured into the genre: this is a great place to start with it! - Dakie SalamanderRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0You would think this is some kind of typical cheap xianxia or LitRPG story with status screens and you could not be more wrong! It's a genuine fun reading. The emotions are real, and you can feel the gripping urgency. The spin is that the MC is not some OP character; he has to fight for everything with blood, tears and pain. He cannot make a single mistake as it could cost him his life.
Grammar - No weird sentences, minimum spelling mistakes Definitely could not find any glaring issues. The only thing I would prefer is to parcel some of the longer paragraphs.
Style - Classical 3rd-person POV and past tense. Otherwise, the style is mature and has a nice flow.
Characters - As a young story, there is not much to say about them. However, Chen looks like a solid character with plenty of space to grow and learn.
I care about the
Strong suit of an already good novel. Well-crafted and well-thought-out.
Story - Again, young story, so there is not much. It appears as a hero's adventure type so far.
The story is about Chen, who has a rather tragic past. At the day of his soul awakening, he fails, unable to get a class which makes him the waste.
Later, he continues to struggle to feed himself and his sick father by going as far as scavenging.
Overall - Recommended! Read it and you won't waste your time. - Ellen TaylorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Apparently this is a xianxia, which I have only ever heard of when I came upon this site. As someone who is a newbie to this specific genre, I had fun. It was a very enjoyable story. I was hooked from the beginning, and had no problems with hitting the next chapter button.
The story was engaging. I found myself interested in the characters. Usually when stories have a prologue, it's a super interesting prologue and then chapters and chapters of boring-ness. This book had a wonderful prologue, and it kept getting interesting!
With the style, there were times when I wanted the author to slow down just a bit to let us see Chen while he was growing up, but I can also appreciate the need to keep the momentum going after such an action packed prologue. The chapters were short without being too short, if that makes sense. There was enough in the chapters that painted a wonderful picture of the world and the situation of the character, but not long enough that it felt daunting to get through. It was a nice balance.
With grammar, I figure five stars is a perfect, no grammar mistakes at all. I found a few, but they were minor enough that it didn't pull me out of the story at all.
Chen is a great, sympathetic character that seems down on his luck. Great for an underdog story, if that is where this book is headed. I feel a lot of sympathy for him, and quickly gained that sympathy early on in the book.
Overall a great read! - Jon WanderRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a well done beginning to what promises to be a finely crafted story. The scope is epic and the author know how to entice the reader with promises of what is to come,
Style: Clear, concise, easy to read but paints a good image in the reader’s head. There is switching between first and third person perspectives, but it is smoothly done and never confusing.
Story: The best part so far. The MC’s adventures are off to a good strong start, but the clash of the gods and their clans of followers promises there will be drama on an epic scale most litRGPs never get to. I’m looking forward to seeing how Chen gets involved in the grander scheme of things exactly.
Character: Chen is a strong character who’ll definitely be able to carry the story to the end and is good company. Currently a big green (from a character perspective not a writing perspective) so we’ll get to see plenty of growth.
Side characters are good, though they haven’t yet had time to show themselves great- though I expect that to change in the near future.
Grammar: No major issue seen, so full marks. The author has a strong understanding of the English language and makes full use of it. - KikiLovesWritingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I didn't know what to expect in this book but it sure blew me away. Usually, this type of book is not what I usually read but with this book, I found myself glued to it! The author has a very good talent for setting the mood/tone for each chapter which helps the immersion. The author's writing is very well written and has a unique style I think any reader who likes this genre of books will enjoy this book. Congrats keep up the good work!
- MrBadWithNamesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Godstone follows the adventures of a remarkably unlucky person where seemingly fate itself it going against them, seeing them push onward and stay determined is great to read and makes you want to root for them even more!
Style:
The story is writted wry nicely, a lot of colourful descriptions and plenty of inner monologue, while I'm sure being an avid reader of the Xianxia genra makes it more enjoyable, there is no entry barrier that would stop, say, a typical fantasy reader from giving it a shot!
Grammar:
Perfect grammar, couldn't spot any mistakes :)
Story:
For fear of a red dragon smiting me down from he heavens for for spoilers in a review - I will simply say this: The story is its early stages right now, if you're up for a fantasy story about an under-dog - this is probably the story for you!
Characters:
The characters in Godstone are very well writter, I'm looking forward to seeing how the MC develops and how the village reacts to the change!
As of this point in the story the world seems like a fairly cold place, so I'm interested what other characters the MC will come across in their jounrey! - VMJaskierniaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A fantastic new well-written xianxia! There are a lot of them on this site, but this one ranks very high. Grammar and story are good, this is not a rush job. A lot of respect for the tropes we all love go into it.
I like the main character and the world that's being set up. The story's still new I can't wait to read more of it.
