AN ANGELS OFDEATH SHORT STORY
Mori has lived her whole life as prey… and now she finally has a chance to become the hunter.
Mortals have murdered her kind for centuries, all because they fear the hellfire burning in every angel of death’s veins. The dark fae kings, the shifter alphas, the siren queens across the sea—their hunts have been brutal and unyielding. Even the humans have begun to discover how to hunt her kind, with their enchanted steel and vast numbers, and it seems the Era of Angels may indeed be over.
All mortals believe that angels are the real monsters in this realm the gods abandoned...
...and they’re not wrong.
Until recently, Mori thought only she and her two sisters were left. Refusing to give up hope that more of their kind had survived, the three of them chase a rumor of the sort of carnage and bloodshed only an angel can leave behind. And, in the aftermath of a massacre, they finally discover another of their kind.
Mori’s long-lost sister Ava, however, knows what it truly means to be an angel of death. She, unlike Mori, has earned her wings. Ava can harness power the others have only dreamed of, and though it comes at a devastating cost, the temptation is difficult to ignore. Before long, Mori and her sisters have to make a choice: join Ava, or go up in flames.
Every family has its dysfunction. Mori’s is just a little more… fiery.

Okay, now that I've immersed myself wholeheartedly into this story, I feel like I can broach the age-old discussion of 'does this suck or not?' I am heartened to inform you that it does not, in fact, suck.
On the contrary, the story is rich and immersive. It binds you, keeps your face affixed to whichever screen you might be reading it from, and generally plays a 190 BPM guitar solo with your heartstrings.
In terms of style, Boyce is a freaking legend. She expertly maneuvers within her vast tapestries of lore and action and precisely knits them into single sentences or phrases. It's like each stroke of her proverbial pen echoes in the vast chasm that is her world-building. Unlike so many stories I've read where people and places are given (unpronounceable) names that are never discussed again, Boyce instead doubles down on a few key concepts and really fleshes them out.
Reading this story felt like a breath of fresh air.
Finally, a story that has a female protagonist is extremely well written. Finally, the start to an epic tale of suspense and danger and violence that seems to actually care about show-don't-tell. From the very first lines, I knew I would be losing sleep because of this new series, as it would be too difficult to put down.
I am so freaking pumped to read the next chapter. And the next. And the next. Well done, S.M. Boyce. Well done. :D
P.S. The affectionate nickname, 'Murder Bunny,' is my new favorite thing and I need that in some form in my life. Thank you. - PerryRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am fan of the author's work to begin with, but this is a well written story. Angels with grudges! Even better...Angry angels with grudges. Strong female main character with awesome growth just in the pages of this tale alone. Looking forward to reading the series that this is the prequel for.
