The game setting of this book is modeled after the early MMO's and is likenedto Ultima Online and Everquest. Readers can expect to find character progression in the game, quests, and items with various degrees of power and abilities. ALTERLIFE is not 'crunchy' with statistics.

The story is lacking something to make it work. The characters have attributes and a framework to build on, but they feel hollow. Perhaps that is the issue with the story at large as well. It's a framework, a skeleton. Events happen far to quickly to matter, and are resolved just as quickly. Done right the current content of the story could likely form five to ten times as many chapters. The speed events happen at is actually detrimental because as there are rewards for little effort over little time, it's hard to be invested in the character's loss of said rewards because he didn't actually earn them, regardless of whether or not he actually needs them. He has a job, just one and it is just enough to barely get by, but instead of looking for another one, he thinks about robbing a bank and overhears how someone made money in the game when he decides not to?  That seems a little extreme. Why not have him get a second job at a NueVue cafe, a game dealership or something similar where he comes into contact with the game. Not nearly enough time is spent with the RL characters to make me invest in their struggles or hardships, and the MCs thoughts and actions are so warped and calous to the point I just don't believe he actually cares. Imagine you and your wife are financially unstable, but both working. Do you discuss and work together to improve your situation by getting second jobs and cutting expenses, or lie to her, consider illegal things, do illegal/reprehensible things, take chance on questionable risk-reward situations with little to no thought or concern about how they'll turn out. The bones of a good story are there, but the execution doesn't put any flesh on the bones and make for a hollow and unsatisfying read that is further worsened by the fact that the world both real and virutal only seems to exist as a backdrop for the main character.
