Description

The Golden Fox Spice Company only has room for one heir, and Kelmar Fox, the second son, must journey out to make his own fortune.

But life on the road is not easy. Whether it's a bruised backside from sitting in a wagon all day, or hungry beasts in the night, Kelmar will have to overcome the obstacles to claim his fate.

Thirsty seamen, a reality bending hedge witch, and frisky healers all have a part to play in this tragic comedy about life, unrequited love, and lies.

What is this?

A dark comedy. A short story barely over 25 pages, and 5 chapters. I'm releasing it purely for fun and giggle value while I'm working on a bigger, more serious piece. I hope you enjoy gallows humor as much as I do.

This author gives us ultra clean, punchy writing with evocative descriptors. This is a win, win, win in my books. The first two chapters were easy to devour and I'm really looking forward to seeing where this goes! I'll update with deeper sentiments once the story's concluded. Thanks for the words.

Everything on the page is so transparent, I have a little trouble hearing his voice clearly. That is a fascinating problem to have, I think it also means the author is going to be doing some surprising things.
So far we have a mechant lordling headead out to make his mark, very unusual and interesting. At first glance we don't see much, but wait.  There is some very nice imagery, scene setting and background, all very engaging and charming.
The world feels so real and delightful, I can't wait to visit a nameless fishing village near me and check out the tavern scene. I was immediatly brought back to after hours at the ren faire, performers whooping it up for their own entertainment. good times and good writing.
    Now I'm all nostalgic.
Ok, I finished, I think you should too.
Bravo. That is all I have to say.

A great story, definitely worth a read. A little tragic, a little funny, a little whimsical and a little wondrous, it has a sort of fairy tale feel to it.
Impulsive choices are made, coincidences ensue and events unfold, throwing Kemar’s life into chaos, leading him to attain what is perhaps the most precious thing of all - immortality through songs.
It's short but impactful, easy to read but having a certain depth to it if you stop to think about it. Stop reading this review and go read the first chapter, you won’t be disappointed.
Style - incredible. This is the highlight of the novel .Evocative and detailed, the only thing I can think of to improve might be the connections between points.
Grammar - I found 0 issues, but that does not mean much.
Story - The plot isn't very complicated, this is a short story with little pretension in that regard, but the relatively straightforward events serve the novel well. Both tragic and comedic, it hit a strange but entertaining sweet spot.
Character - There aren't many fleshed out characters, but right from the start we are immersed into kelmar's life, and he feels real all throughout the story. Full of passion, optimism and ambition, he will follow the call to adventure and see where it will lead him.

I have just started dipping my toes into the fantasy realm, and I'm so pleased to have read this story early on because it has made me crave more!
The author can be lyrical, dark and even comedic at the same time. I have gone back and reread the trip that is entering the witch's hut more than one time.
Cannot wait for M.J. Shafa's upcoming Broken Path... I can already sense that exciting feeling that comes for you whenever you discover something new.
