- yggdrasil_dreamerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The summary can be improved a little. At least a dozen eldritch minds have appeared in Manilla. Some have fused with animals, others with humans. The first have become the kind of grimdark horrors you find in Warhammer stories. But the humans, at least some of them, are managing to keep their humanity. (For now? Partially? Too soon to tell! )
Beyond the gore and crazy powers of the heroes, what I like in this story is the fun and believable characters. How not to smile when two nerds try to become heroes with their nightmarish powers and quotes from Spiderman and Japanese animes.
This story clearly still needs a native English speaker to proofread it. It is the only bad thing I can tell about it. And it is easy to find one if it gains more readers.
Maybe I can suggest to the writer the inclusion of a small map of Manilla at the end of each chapter. I think the story use only real locations, and it would help immersion for all the readers from others parts of the world.
I believe this story has a lot of potential. I think an improved summary might help. I suspect a lot of readers only give a quick look at the title and the cover, and never give it a chance. - PhruxxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Take the basic premise of Worm but with better writing, no spandex, and no fetishistic degree of EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE. I hated Worm but I love this.
Goes into loving detail on the psychology and anatomy of eldritch horrors. Very well written, good action scenes, likable characters, great setup for plot and drama. - ishnerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a story of eldritch horrors,
but
it is not a story of eldritch horror.
The things which have, in this story, decened upon this world and embedded themselves within the minds and bodies of its inhabitants are surely strange and terrifying enough to well deserve the appellation, but what does one do in the face of such incomprehensible power?
The classic answer is to go mad as your mind breaks itself struggling to understand what it cannot. This is Eldritch Horror, and it is what Lovecraft wrote afterall...
The less common answer is to go mad as the boundless despair of your newfound understanding of your own worthless insignificance overtakes you. This is Cosmic Horror, and this too Lovecraft wrote.
This story gives a different answer: When faced with an incomprehensible horror from beyond reality you will come up with a workable approximation you can understand and move on with your day. When an alien god-thing burrows into your soul to use you as a maw with which to devour other alien god-things, you do your best to adapt to your new urges and do as you see fit with your newfound capacity.
From there, a story could go dark and focus on the creulty our kind so often inflict upon eachother and how much worse it could be with great power in the hands of a few.
That is not this story though. Our main characters are not the scum of the earth, preying upon eachother and abusing the defenseless. Nor is this some sugarbowl denying the darker aspects of mankind; people like that just dont get to be main characters here.
If you like the strangeness and creativity of eldritch horror but do not much love the bleak outlook so often found in such works, you will love this story.

Every one of the characters is distinctive and internally consistent. Tammy acts abnormally mature for her age, but it makes sense given her past ans she is not entierly an adult pasted over a child character. Sanny is brobably flawed having trapped himself is a lie to socially awkward to bac - KnightBladeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Eldritch Sentai set in the Philippines....you have my interest good sir or madam. I'm only a few chapters in, but this has intrigued me so far. Keep up the great work! Like honestly, its a bit slow-ish at the start, but then we see how fucked up things get, and so far, its great. Loving it, especially as how you make it really feel like the Philippines.
- EdmangoRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Well not that gruesome, though there's descriptions of body horror and gore and violence that some might not like I find it to be tasteful.
But for an actual review, well it's a "superhero" story where people get powers and use them to help people, the twist is that their powers manifest and morph them into cool monstrocities, hence the nightmare part of the title.
There's also a worm-esque mystery surrounding the origin of the power source and I approve of that wholeheartedly.
There are a few annoying characters who are there with purpose, but get me to drop .5 of a star. I get the reason that they're there, and they're written as a point of conflict and realism, but still was annoyed when I read segments with them
But I'd highly reccomend reading it, it's ongoing and worth your time, even if for only a few chapters to see if you vibe with it. - BeyogiRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story is about people getting eldrich powers and fighting monsters.
So far this story basically contains two narratives. First finding and adding more people to their "heroic vigilante" team. Second introducing the characters and their powers.
Overall I really like the eldrich nature of the powers involved. The way the powers work tends to be somewhat disturbing and it comes with needs which are surprisingly primal: Eat and survive.
Overall I really like the way this story unfolds, how filipino culture is waved into it and how the motivations and backstories of the characters differ. The main weakness is that the pacing of this story has been really slow - which isn't helped by having sometimes very long introduction arcs for each character. There also doesn't seem to be much of a main plotline yet beyond dealing with the eldrich powers and the monster of the day.
A very interesting story if you like supers and a great take on diverse characters. - IzmisterRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Any fans of body horror will be immediately pleased by the very first chapter, the internal monologue by our first protagonist is breathtaking in description and shock value, this interspaced with the monster on monster carnage makes the story incredibly attention grabbing.
The subsequent character introductions and later perspectives don't really detract from that intitial sense of alien-ness, though the horror tones are muted for some of the more "human" interactions. I stress the human part because only after the first couple dozen chapters do we really see non monster/ranger characters take the stage as supporting cast. With that in mind, I would say the characterizations have been Great!, for monstrous humanoids.
So besides the protag interactions (the rangers) and the internal struggles and gratuitous violence; there is a human element in the background. These being what the bystanders, news media, and government; all do in reaction to the monstrous elements. It is no exaggeration of mine when i say the rest of the people in the world appear to be some of the most grimdark suffering, supernaturally ambivelant people I have ever seen. Granted it lends itself well to the logical conclusion of the "horrific parody to the sentaiger genre" that this story is. It also creates an atmosphere of hoplessness and jarring juxtiposition from our safer lives that is staggering.
With all that said, the author has done a fantastic job of creating a terrifying tableau of gore, violence, and the uncanny. Not gonna be everybody's cup of tea but for those interested in the genre it is a fantastic addition and well worth the read.
(Minor gripe about editing, but I dont tend to weight that in my ratings.)
