Accidental Necromancer
Community Rating
Description
Hiding my necromancy from the world should’ve been my biggest problem. Necromancy is forbidden, an automatic death sentence for witches like me. I would’ve been happy to keep my head down, do my part for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations as their only on-staff witch, and solve magical crimes. I’d planned to do just that until my first day as an agent when my new boss punched me in the face.
To make work extra exciting, mutilated bodies began showing up around town. Magic, unlike anything I’ve ever seen, coats them from skin to bone. I have to find the killer before they lose control of the spells and kill even more people. Did I mention the stalker? He’s the reason I live with a vampire.
Maybe I should start at the beginning.
I’m Special Agent Kelsey Pine, witch, necromancer, and I have a few problems.

- YellowTuckRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’ve very much enjoyed this story so far. The main character feels real and is relatable. Of course, any story that has a canine friend is an automatic 5 stars for me!
I like that the magic system is simple and that the progression of the MC is steady and focused on the theme of her accidental necromancy. A thoroughly enjoyable premise! - Famine BringerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is definitely a unique take on the "System Descent" trope. It shows a character who has a healthy drive for power, reasonable thinking, and she isn't afraid to kill, if need be, but this doesn't mean she kills for fun. The way the system works is rather unique as well, and I imagine the path to power would feel a little grindy, had she chosen anything other than a necromancer's path. I love the way this story is written, and cannot wait to read more. Thanks for the Chapters of the Past, Present, and Future!
- CampaspeLlamicornRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Accidental necromancer is set in our world, post an "event" that introduces magic suddenly with no clear reason - yet. Once you swallow that, the story follows smoothly. The characters are too busy trying to survive in this new increasingly hazardous world to spend time wondering "why".
Selina, the MC, is relatable and well written. She's a med student who got necromancy skills from fighting zombies, and is trying her best to be ethical about her increasingly vast and creepy powers, but not everyone else is. She fights monsters and helps other survivors. She battles nasty very bad humans and allies with sentient monsters. There is a big cast of characters, fleshed out to varying degrees (I'd love more perspective from the monsters!). I particularly like the magic system, it feels VERY game like but also isn't like any RPG Ive seen.
There's always some new threat on the horizon, something new to stress about. It's a real page turner, one of the few stories on here I read a chapter immediately it is released, not saving it up to read half a dozen together.
Slight niggle is the style of writing sometimes feels like a style of long form text ad that I keep seeing on social media. Just the way sentences are put together, I half expected a mention of the Teedoo app, and wouldn't have been surprised to learn AI was used heavily. That was most prominent in early chapters and I am not noticing it in later ones. Overall the style and Grammer are very good.
You should give it a try. I'm glad I did. - LyssaLynnRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall:
Masterfully written N.E. Coneely takes us into an exiting urban fantasy adventur with Special Agent Kesley Pine, Witch and secret Necromancy. In just a few chapters the author establishes a wounderfully deep deep world and magic systwm full of living deep characters.
Style:
Caneely's writing is not only a pleasure to read, but also very thought out. Writing in a style not too unsimilar to professional and experience authors practically not a word is wasted, with everything seemingly having a purpose to the story and its world
Story:
We find ourselves in a rich world full of recognizable places, races and magic readers will already know from other fantasy works. Despite this They are being weaved masterfully into a complicated and mysterious modern crime story full of high stakes and suspicious events creating tension that finally pays off in the end of the Book. Together with the stakes of Kelseys secret being discoverd we find her in a constant struggle between being found out and being killed for using what she has no fault in having and using her unique powers to save lives and do good.
Character:
Writing a hero, a main character without them becoming an all powerfull mary sue or a complete ass to all other characters whose opinion is the only one which matters takes skill. It takes even more to write a character who is not only likeable from a readers perspective but also a flawed but well meaning individual in the story. Such makes Kelsey Pine into an interesting and strong character who is not only trying to become more than she is, but also doesnt let herself become bullied. Having to learn to trust again and rely on others to deal with current problems as well as past trauma she grows wounderfully with the story.
Grammar:
Not much can be said here. English is not my first language but I have not found any spelling or grammatical mistakes in the work and could enjoy a clearly well written book. - MachomachoteRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0In this gripping saga, we follow Selena as she navigates a world flipped on its head by the sudden reemergence of magic and the demise of modern technology. Starting in a medical school's anatomy class, the series quickly descends into chaos when cadavers reanimate into zombies. Selena, armed with newfound magical abilities gained from mysterious crystals, finds herself in the unexpected role of a leader. These crystals, offering powers like undead control and enhanced agility, are central to the narrative, deepening the plot with a magical system that blends dark fantasy elements seamlessly into the unfolding apocalypse. As Selena and her allies battle hordes of zombies and other mystical threats, the story explores themes of survival, power, and human resilience. The detailed and intense action sequences keep the pace rapid and engaging, providing a fresh twist on zombie lore and magical warfare. Overall, the series offers a thrilling ride through a chaotic new world where every decision could mean the difference between life and undeath.
- MetalwereRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Never ever did i think of reading a necro story with a undead t-rex in it.
turns out i love that shit.
I als like the gembased progression it gives a tangible feeling of grouwth.
and a not psychotic Mc is also nice for a change.
keep up the great work wordsmith! - BerderRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like the leveling-up system, which is different from any I've seen before. And I like how the story seems to be written by a smart person. There are realistic, mundane post apocalyptic survival concerns, like food, water, medical care, and allies. It's like a cross between the zombie defense genre and a litRPG.
- PotassiumRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an Urban Fantasy, following some of the standard tropes of the genre. The investigative angle, the magic and modern mix. It is week written, with few to none grammatical mistakes, has a compelling MC and I will follow it with interest. It certainly deserves more attention than it has gotten here.
- Reader1587Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Not my usual genre, but I was curious about medicine student turned necromancer.
I got what I expected, and I am satisfied with my reading experience so far, giving the story full stars.
