- NovaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I just finished reading the whole thing. And I couldn't stop reading the whole time. I even skipped sleeping. The binge is real.
The Style:
Yes, the early chapters are somewhat exposition heavy, and for a chapter or so I was a bit confused as there was a sudden jump as to "when" this chapter fits into the story. Which turned out to be a retrospection.
But that seems to be limited to the early chapters.
The Story is only told from Abby's perspective.
The Grammar:
As far as I can tell, it's pretty decent. From what I have seen there are mostly typos. (And one part in German where I believe a "Dativ" should be used, but yeah not sure how those rules apply in an English sentence).
So basically as far as I can tell it's almost perfect.
The Story:
Ok. Yeah. The synopsis says it all ;)
The story follows Abby Smith, a teenager around 15ish at the start, 17ish at the current point in the story, that one day discovers that she can do a thing that many others can't.
The premise in itself is not unique, but I really do like the execution in this case.
And despite the story revolving around an admittedly rather dark theme, which is also the driving factor behind the main characters motivation, the story itself has a pretty light tone.
Yes, there are "darker chapters", but with the storytelling limited to what Abby herself sees and experiences, those are also the chapters in which we have her actively working on ending those circumstances.
The Characters:
Ok, the characters.
There is, for the most part, a lightheartedness to (all of) them and their interactions with Abby. Which personally, I appreciate. It's also pretty clear cut who the good people and the bad people are. So not many (if any) grey characters as far as I remember.
Which lends itself to the overall feel good reading experience.
Abby herself might be the greyest character overall. What I kinda like about her though, is that she doesn't just do / decide something, instead she is reflecting very often on her own acti - VRRangerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I saw a meme in a royal road subbredditt. 2 booths. First booth read well witten story with character development and world building. 4 people in line. Second booth read leveling a potatoe. Hundreds in line. That made me think of this book. This is well written, great character, solid world building. It is slice of life, it is slow, but a fun read where the writer consistently posted and let us know if there was a break. Very original premise and plot.
CONS: when describing the powers it does sometimes get a little too detailed and I felt it detracted from the story. And unfortunately at the beginning I was more excited for the MC to come to a certain realization based on discovering the powers, and skimmed chapters before realizing the character wasn't going to do that, and then I just had to slow down and enjoy the story without setting certain expectations. By the end of the third book there was really good dialogue and interesting scenes and character interactions that I wish the author spent more time on, but overall excellent story and I am looking forward to what else they write. - GygamaRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Positives:
It`s a well written story with a interesting female mc and a exploracion of a novel set of powers. In between the more fantastical elements is the more grounded slice of life of a teennager that makes the story more realistic and relatable.
Negatives:
For me it´s bigest flaw is being a bit bland. Multiple caracters funcion as litle more potencial romantic partners and the "drama" it´s small and never truly explored. The main "bad guys" are just bad guys.
The main antagonists are human traffickers witch are represented without nuance for the many types that exist choosing the one that is almost dark lord evil but hopefliy that can chage - AfeaRoyal Road★★★ 3.0The story begin's, when we get itroduced to our main heroine who just awoke to her super powers, then we enter the quagmire of increasingly pointless and long winded exposition. We get introduced to heroine's uncle(no issues so far), friends(there the issues begin), father, and then we get a flashback of her mother. All this detracts from the story.
