Description
The first book of A Suspicious Lack of Horses - World has moved to KU. You can find ithere.
World: The framework of reality. The rules which govern interaction. The dimensions within which existence takes place.
Soul: Mind. The source of thought, of consciousness. The means by which reality is observed.
Body: Form. The means by which one interacts with the World. The substance from which reality is formed.
Spirit: Life. The connection between Soul and Body. The anchor to the World.
These are the foundational forces from which all of reality is formed, and when they take human form, they are givenothernames.
Conqueror.
War.
Famine.
Death.
Together, they are known as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Though why anyone would think they'd ever needhorsesis a mystery.
However, to themselves, they're just Chris, Thomas, Greg, and Andrew, four guys just trying to live life the best they can. Chris grew up knowing he was going to die, but when he did, he was surprised to find it wasn't the end. Thomas was just thinking he should get in better shape when a strange window appeared in his vision displaying a simple task. Greg was sitting in class when everything went dark and he awoke to a destroyed world with strange new abilities. Andrew was born a Beast, a being with abilities far beyond the average person, yet when a Hunting trip goes wrong, he begins to realize there's somethingmoreto what he is, something beyond the norm for even a Beast.
They neverwantedto destroy anything. All they wanted to do was live their lives, to be happy, or at least content. But the Multiverse doesn't let those born unique havenormallives. Itfocuseson them, and through coincidence and happenstance, draws them to haveinterestinglives. Unfortunately for the Four, happy, normal lives are far from interesting. As they're drawn out of their comfort zones and confronted with the dark and twisted sides of reality, the Four are asked one simple question: do you let this stand, or are you going todosomething about it?
Chris: Do we have to?
Thomas: Wehaveto.
Greg: Fine, but if we're doing this, I'm going all in. Total destruction or nothing, baby!
Andrew: *sighs* Why does it always have to beme?
As you've probably guessed by now, this story has four main characters, and their stories begin separately before converging into one, essentially amounting to each one getting their own individual book before they get together. Possibly a questionable decision on my part, but I felt it necessary for the characters development, to give each one their own space to grow in. Also, since we're giving disclaimers, the sexual content tag should be more of a sexual situations tag. Yes, it happens, but no, I'm not describing it, so no smut chapters. Sorry to disappoint.

- B-whyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is good. That's the pro in all this. The con for me personally is there could only be one. Meaning I can only focus on one thing. One story! It all entwines but my mind is like I can't focus. The pro over comes the con since it's well written and entertaining. So keep it up!!!
- Cynical PastaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story definitely has an exciting premise, but it's style has a few costs and sacrifices. The four stories are all different, but they share many themes, and many of the main character's personality traits are similar.
But most of that is a question of taste and preferences. Other notable aspects of the story need saying, the characters are all interesting, but they lack physical description, and there is what I would consider an annoying tendency towards quasi-harems for each story (though not soul, yet) despite them trying to be monogamous. The settings are all somewhat unique, but they lean towards game-y themes.
Overall, it's a fun set of stories to read. - Eclectic831Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story keeps me wanting to read more. There are four storylines which switch every few chapters. Each character is extremely powerful but flawed. They try to do what is right with no training and very little guidance. They find themselves in flawed situations and due to their power, they feel a responsibility to help. They are not always right. Their power and situation gives them an odd perspective on life that is sometimes amusing and always thought provoking. Trying to figure out how to do life and help when you are so much more powerful than those around you is a problem.
If you like to think, and enjoy considering odd perspectives you will enjoy this book. You will not agree with everything, but the author makes it clear you are not supposed to. The characters are on a journey of self discovery. They try to be heroes but are not. There are some indications that their best intentions are not going to end well. You like them, but you also see them as people who forget to.ask for advice and try to control everything they feel needs to be fixed. Overlords, even benevolent ones, are never a good thing and even though they try to avoid it, you can see the writing on the wall.
The writing style is from the perspective of the over powered individual. Four story lines weave together with increasingly common themes.
There is no problem with the grammar and punctuation. - FyWyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've finished reading this up to Monroe and so far I've loved it. The four parts before was perfect and definitely kept me hooked much longer than most stories do. They always continue a plot point to a climax before the end, almost acting like a setup for the later part of the book when they all meet together. The length of each of those was perfect for me and There's even some I would want longer cause I had so much fun reading them. My least favorite part is the attention to more sexual topics when you could say they're not needed or at least a bit overdone. However, they do add to multiple characters and it's more of a preference on my side. The main characters abilities can seem similar when you start reading and so do the characters but once you get later in the book things make more sense and they all have certain similarities in their thinking. Overall an amazing read and I'm going to be reading this for a while, if not just because of the potential that's left now that they're all together and have like 5 or so plot points in different worlds.
I still need more words for the review but I'm typing this on mobile and I'm too tired to continue writing an in depth essay with mobile typing. So here are some very fun words. Derieur (I have literally no idea if I spelled that right), Aioli (Same for this one my brain doesn't like the vowels. Are they called vowels or is that the sound part. like how though only has one vowel but like more than those in the letters. My brain is too tired why did I make this an advanced review. I could change it but I'm too lazy to remove this part of the message so ughhh. What's your favorite color line is green. I nearly misspelled green. How is language a thing. Like I understand it is a thing but wow it's kind of amazing. But lots of animals have language ours is just words instead of movements or pheromones like some insects. - Le_Doctor_BonesRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I like this novel a lot, and with the new chapter format that is being introduced in the coming weeks, I felt it was finally time to drop my review since I am not neccesarilly completely in agreement with the other reviews I have read over where the biggest problems are in this novel.
So without further ado, I will write a bit (or a lot) about each of the advanced scores before a final breakdown of the overall score.
Style:
Some have complained, justly I might add, that the story is simply 4 books put together. While I personally really like 3/4 and am okay with the last, there certainly is an inherent problem when 4 different "prologues" need to be combined into 1 later story. It might have been better to have seperated them into their own novels, though, I can understand the reasons the author gave for not doing so. Other than this problem, the style in each of the four stories is fine and standard. It can sometimes feel a bit too centered on the main protagonist, though the reason for this is something I will mostly touch in the character score.
4.5/5
Grammar:
Not much to add here, I haven't really noticed any grammatical problems that I can still remember which must mean that the few existing problems are sparse enough that it doesn't hurt the story in any way.
5/5
Story:
This is where I believe the novel shines. The 4 different stories are all both unique to each other and to basically all other stories on this site. You can find some comparisons between one of the stories and others on RR but then the unique abilities of the MC - unique even when comparet to pretty unique powers in each of the different stories - makes the story even more unique and better. The worldbuilding in the different stories are also very fun to read about and you can even get some cool debates on governing different societies than our own which is always very interesting.
4 x 5/5 (All the different stories get 5 stars. (Maybe only 4.5 for the body story, but eh.))
Characters:
Now it i - Ninegame9Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Basically, 4 different stories are set in the same setting. Don't go in expecting the main characters to see each other any time soon. Think of it as 4 different books that will eventually briefly meet up at the end. Stories remain interesting through the read so it's not that bad but just be prepared.
- Ab AeternoRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Just stumbled on this and I can't stop reading. The story starts pessimistic, but changes its tone rather quickly.
It even has its occasional humorous lines.
The only complaint I have is that the two first MCs feel a little same-y, personality wise. There are differences, even major ones. But their flaws, strengths and ways of thinking start off rather similar.
A theme of this story is growth- both in power and of character. Which is why I am sure that as the story progresses they will become more distinct.
Keep in mind I'm typing this review before the end of the second arc, and that this issue can very easily be fixed organically in the future of the story.
All in all, 4/5 - would recommend. - ConsumedCryptRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0*This review is designed to be read by the author, for feedback purposes rather than as a recommendation. *
*Scores are slightly inflated from absolute standards. Five stars here is by the yardstick of Royal Road for overall, rather than published authors.*
This story is fairly rare on Royal Road. It feels like an actual book, rather than a audience-pandering power fantasy. Somehow, despite having barely touched the greater plot, there is a sense of intentionality in the story. I want to read because I feel like the author knows what's happening. Thus, the story gets the full rating, because it manages to somehow draw me in without actually telling me what it's promising. There's only a handful of stories online capable of this sort of magnetism, so if I put the author in the same lot as ****** *********** ** (story has unfortunately been scrubbed), Worm/Pact, Displaced, The Perfect Run and The Gods are Bastards, I hope the comparison flatters.
Stylewise, the author seems to have developed an easy-to-read style that helps the story work well. An especially bright spot is the dialogue. The overall style could be improved of course, but really, practice is probably the best fix, and individual suggestions for thorny passages would be endlessly more helpful, because there's no single objection to the work as a whole.
Grammar is solid, but things like "" (double double quotation marks) pop up, and very rarely a word is misspelled.
Characters - the weirdest part of this review. I'm not sure how much of this is meant to be parallelism, but there are a couple of recurring tropes with the protagonists seeming distant, a little emotionally stunted, etc. I think the author's doing a good job at making them all similar except in their distinguishing quirks for the sake of exaggerating what makes them unique (i.e Body's urge to construct, Spirit's urge to connect, World's ... kinda hard to explain but aloofness, and Soul's introspection and untetheredness to the outside world. - Onerous_SheepRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This is my first review here on RR, but I feel like aSLoH deserves it.
Story starts off really great with the general power fantasies, logical and consistent flow of events and actions, funny and serious mixed together. It gets kinda confusing with four protagonists, but each of the first four books are cool to read on their own. The rest of the story is where I think most of the problems start happening, especially as the pov jumps between Worlds. Protags get too caught up in their responsibility and the story gets tangled up.
Style: okay, nothing special, nothing terrible, totally understandble and gets the point across
Story: gets a bit too caught up in philosophy as it continues, with a lot of the chapters being about the characters just talking about the plan, and then deciding to do something they were probably going to do anyway. These would have probably been better to summarize instead of make full convos.
Grammer: I didn't see any egregious mistakes.
Character: protagonists feel really samey at the start, but when they get together you can tell there was a lot of thought put into them. Side characters are kind of interesting but all of them seem to have the same kind of forced 'in-awe' mindset when it comes to the protagonists. However these don't get to in the way of the story, it just seems like history repeats itself a lot. - jimminycicadaRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5as the title says this story is a mixed bag. the Soul and Spirit chapters are fun to read with interesting characters. World chapters were fun at the begining but it now feels that he didnt earn any of his power and it feels boring because there is no risk what so ever. the Body chapters are just ridiculous his power feels unearned and
how he attempts to teach morality to monsters feels stupid like his plan is to beat them up till they dont beat people up.
some thing that i do like about this is Soul and World have really intresting minds that have obviously been affected by their nature as the incarnations of the basic building blocks of reality. and their powers are well chosen and design and fit thematically with what each MC is the incarnation of. overall this is a well written story and i hope that BookWyrm continues to write.
