- spacecowboyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Delirious had one hell of a plan going into this story, is the only thing that I can think of. The characters are established from the start, fleshed out quite well, and we hit the ground running in a more unique setting than I can recall other SCS stories using. Rural farmland and its surroundings turns the initial combat action scenes for Spark into a fun, running narrative that Delirious absolutely nails.
As a character, Spark is quite fun. Mad scientist vibes are presented basically from the start, cobbling together things to make odd but functional devices. Most SCS stories start out with the new Vanguard needing meds and a gun as their first purchases. Spark? Turns a backpack pressure washer into a weapon instead. And that just sets the scene for the kind of fun you come to expect from this character. The trans theme is done tastefully and with purpose, tying into a larger plot line that is honestly one hell of a doozy when some revelations are had. All of this makes Spark a complex, enjoyable character that is easy to empathize with and follow.
What really makes this story stand out above all of the others, to me, is that there is an amazing balance between the inevitable action scenes SCS's LitPRG focuses on, and the more relaxed time to build up the characters when not under duress. The action is well paced and we are given plenty of details to picture quite well what is going on. There's again, also some very creative approaches taken by Spark and others, which is quite fun. Delirious also brings in other Vanguards rather early on, so we get to see the web of character interactions form and solidify rather fast, which only elevates the story further.
Definitely a must read for anyone who enjoys LitRPGs to me. - vae daRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Gay, trans foxgirl who shoots aliens with lightning and (at least in the second book) gay panics when cute girls/entities compliments her. Or gives her headscritches. Honestly a great story! There's some trans stuff that are written very well. Possibly a bit short, but it isn't exactly a coming out story or anything but an SCS fanfic, so there's alien killing, family and friends and gays being gay, as it should be. There's also a polycule and a character who uses neopronouns. Pretty good spread of queer culture in here, especially trans queer culture. Also a bunch of great fights, cute moments between a collection of great characters. And some trauma. And (familial) abuse. And, of course, corpos being corpos.
- IluzryMageRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I started reading spark as a way of trying to hone my own fanfiction only to get sucked into the journey of a farm girl trying to find herself in a world that wants her dead.
The emotional highs and lows are real and understandable, the combat is snappy and tense and the relationships made my heart flutter more than once.
Beyond just being a really solid side story to stray cat strut, A spark of sylvan flame is a fantastic queer family drama and I couldn't get enough.
The story is short and contained and honestly I think it's better for it. I could spend a long time talking about the chapters I loved but really just read it. If you don't fall in love with this furry goofball, I have no idea how else to sell you. - FoxGoddess StellaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is the fanfic that first got me into SCS and also why I started writing fanfic of it myself. The characters are fun, the story is engaging, there's lots of fluff, what's not to love? DeliriousSprite is an incredible author and I cannot recommend her works enough.
No I'm not biased at all. You're awesome and adorable and this is not up for debate! Love you babe <3 - ThisIsMyFateNowRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has done an amazing job of weaving combat, slice of life, heartache, adventure, found family, and so much more together.
While I can only speak from my own personal experiences, many aspects of Spark's journey resonated with me. From not looking in/hiding mirrors, general dysmorphia, to even needing to change NOW, it was deeply comforting to see these played out in another.
I also am in love with Spark's snark. It's such a fun thing too see how she intersects with the other characters and how she also grows in her views and opinions. To me, she feels like a well balanced character that has good progression, amazing personal growth, and hope for the future.
Kudos to you, DeliriousSprite. You've crafted one of my favorite SCS stories and I can't wait for more of the adorable fox. - OntokineticRoyal Road★★★ 3.0The story is polished and easy to follow. Grammar and spelling is deliberately broken for comedic effect. Dialogue is distinguished from the narration and fits the characters well. Special use of invented words from the setting brings consistency and immersion.
Characters are varied and make choices believably. Character interactions aren’t forced but often confound until explained retroactively with added information. Character tension is almost nonexistent and most challenges are resolved immediately or are minimally demonstrated. The characters and their backstories fit the setting well and develop aspects which aren’t explored in fellow fanfictions.
The topics written about are intriguing but shallow in their exploration.
The character dynamics are the most described topic: they are entertaining and funny but loose my interest without proper stakes.
The plot while starting strong losses my engagement after the first arc. The premise is unique and unexpected but beyond that it becomes too much “and then this happens.” Making events feel insignificant. However The plot does well in tying itself to the setting and demonstrating elements in ways that link character events to the wider world.
Nothing is bad about the story, it is well executed in everything it attempts. The story just lacks aspects that I find needed to keep me engaged and wanting to return to it. - BlazedrRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Gave a rating and a reason, it got removed. Anyway I'll try it again. You have to name your kid after a season or element to be relevant to the story. An element if you want powers. Everything just magically appears that everyone needs at the right time, which is okay but doesn't allow character growth since there is no struggle. The number system is confusing and doesn't make sense. This story shows signs of rinse repeat. I came for struggle and identity crisis because it makes the MC more real but this is not that sort of story.
