- IstaNonCuroRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Don't really see why this fic got so low ratings (for RR standards).
Writing is good, the pokemon battles show an amount of creativity and a lack of common pet-peeves that would make me put them in the top 20% of pokemon-fics I read, characters are genuinely good and don't feel like your typical cardboard-cutout SI Nr 10.
Sure, the fic is not perfect, but I did not encounter anything what I would truly see as a negative, more like a few rough edges, and they often vanished rather quickly as the author further improved.
Story took a bit to go from "fun to read" to "I am truly hooked", but I tend to be more critical about Pokefics than other people.
Overall, a good realistic take on Pokemon without going into super dark and edgy territory, I definitely recommend giving it a try.
Also, SPHEAL! - o_oHoshiko_oRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a really well written piece of fiction. Usually a pokemon fanfi c will start by giving the mc a popular amazing starter, and I like how the author has chosen a starter that is not "generic" . Similarly, I also love how the author has chosen to give Derek a hoenn background, and yet incorporate him into the making game/manga/anime storyline (the mention of Blue as Gary's nickname was genius).
I would recommend this fic as it focuses on the real life aspects that are present in the pokemon world:
That not everything is fair, fun or safe in a world full of superpowers battle pets that can kill you. The power difference and regret that ordinary people suffer from compared to the privileged is sobering and incredibly realistic and on point. The author has done a good job of depicting this through the guilt Derek feels, and the subsequently mental issues he suffers with. I liked how the mc was not presented as a superpowers kid with loads of luck and no conscience. I recognise how realistic it is that he doesn't know how to deal with real friends and people looking after him, so he feels like he doesn't deserve any luck or anything good because he is too privelaged already (due to trauma from bullying when he younger). I like how the author acknowledges this and removes the stigma of going to therapy.
Overall, I have really enjoyed this fic so far, an amazing job by the author, full 5 star review.
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 - MackerelRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall, I find this to be a great pokemon fanfic that explores the classic Pokemon Red journey through Kanto in a new and interesting way. There are a lot of original characters with unique and varied personalities and backgrounds. I personally appreciate that the author goes out of their way to be LGBTQ+ inclusive with their cast. The action and pokemon fun is also there, being a good mix of exciting and not too gory and murderpet-esque. Lastly, the plot, while still in the early stages, seems like it is fairly thought out and heading in a definitive direction.
Style Score: In terms of style, I think the author does a great job of blending the excitement of battling, the familiarity of certain game mechanics, and their own imaginative take on the pokemon world to create engaging and immersive scenes. Dialogue between characters also flows smoothly with a wide range of vocabulary.
Story Score: The story itself seems to be a take on the original pokemon games story. A trainer travels through Kanto to collect badges and try to win the League while Team Rocket is in the background causing trouble. The author has centered the story around an original character though, one who definitely is not Red or Ash, and has added modern factors such as later generation pokemon, social media influence, the internet, etc. Basically, anyone familiar with the franchise can kind of tell where the story is going at any given time, but the author has left themself room to put their own spin on it and keep it fresh for readers.
Grammar Score: No real complaints here. There are the occasional typos or errors here and there, but that's fairly normal. Overall, I've never had moments where the grammar was just so bad that I couldn't enjoy the story, which has been a real issue for me with some other fanfics.
Character Score: I absolutely love the original characters featured in this story. One of the things that really stands out to me is that so many of them have unique and powerful motivat - Goten32Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0To begin; the bad:
The story needs a proofread/editor, it's not frequent but regularly I find myself needing to double-take a sentence or word because it doesn't make sense in context/was probably a typo.
The good: Everything else.
The formula of an in universe character going on a gym collecting journey is the core to what I enjoy in a pokemon story.
The characters are solid and fit right in the pseudo teen drama vibes, all of the cast comes off as believable and enjoyable to see interact.
The fights are good, while not exceptionally interesting they flow well and do a good job showing off character growth and serve to forward plot development.
The chapter length made the current 44 chapters last long enough to sink my teeth into and get a vested interest in the story going forward.
Overall I can't wait for more chapters come out and reveal the plans Olive has for Derek and co! - IxtaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a great start to a new story. I like how the author is building up the characters and the setting a bit more each chapter. I personally enjoy a slow build where we find out more details each chapter rather than getting early exposition dumps. I'm also enjoying the balance of light and dark without either being overwhelming. There's a lot of great interactions with friendly and helpful people and pokemon, and also some that show off how dangerous and dark a realistic pokemon world could be. I think this story has a lot of potential, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the character and his team develop.
- AressweRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Just wanted to post a review as im currently really enjoying the story so far.
Its been great and love the interactions between the characters, with each being interesting in their own way.
I quite like the fact that there is a bit of the darker side of Pokemon but not too much that it becomes depressing.
Anyways Im liking it so far and cant wait to see where it goes. - Loki's ChildRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Unlike most this story seems to be primary Game-Verse with a little of the others thrown in. Instead of the other way around. Both the MC and supporting character seem to be getting fleshed out so as not to be 2D. Grammar and spelling are good and the story interesting.
I really like how the author expands on the personally and quarks of their OC's and Canon characters. If you like Pokemon stories that are have good world building, interesting characters, and plot this is the story for you. - SparklzSwordfishRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Love where the story is going so far! The characters we've met are all wonderful and the extra-regional origins allows for a knowledgeable fish out of water without being another isekai. I enjoy the little references to anime locations, and I'm sure I've missed a few since its been a while since I watched the Indigo League.
There are a few points where I had to stop and figure out what was trying to be said, but nothing to egregious. The battle strats seem strange, but that could be just because the trainers are all rookies. - Goat ManRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5I liked this fic but tbh I just find it a little annoying as it seems to be more focused on the slice-of-life side than anything else this along with the way all the characters talk makes it feel like a clicky high school drama where everyone is overly nice or just an asshole with pokemon being more of a side plot device to the drama of the main story.
The racism is there but the author has not made any clear cultural differences other than a few sayings the MC had which makes it feel like it's not real in a sense. I'm not saying that it shouldn't be there but even making the way he talks slightly different or some small cultural thing like he doesn't bow when he's expected to so seems rude the sort of small differences you'd expect from someone who moved to another country. There are supposed to be a few in the way they act but his friends act the same as him and they are all from Kanto except Hanna who acts the same as the rest anyway culturally speaking.
This isn't a major point tbh it was just something I noticed.
The main character has some mental health issues, which is fine as it is not a case of the author pretending that he is fine but rather it is a case of he needs to work through this. This comes ahead after he is involved in stopping a terrorist attack and he gets PTSD and other issues. However, the MC is worse off than he seems as it is not just the PTSD and other issues from the attack. He has a major case of rich kid guilt to the point where he hates himself I understood when he denied help from his parents because wanting to stand on your own is a perfectly reasonable and somewhat noble sentiment but he starts denying opportunities he earned from elsewhere because they weren't offered to his friends too. He also recklessly throws himself into danger like he's trying to be killed he just doesn't seem to care about his life or success. Which ironically makes him seem pretty privileged as he can afford to pass up these opportunities knowing he'll be - Kamin08Royal Road★★★★ 3.5This story only has a few chapters out right now, so it's unclear how it will progress, but here are some initial thoughts:
Getting the negatives out of the way, there are some grammer and spelling issues, not to the point where the chapters become unintelligible, but enough where the reader does occasionally have to stop and translate what was probably meant. As of the time of this reveiw even the first chapter is less than 2 hours old though, so that will likely be edited with time and readership. The side characters aren't super developed yet, but again, it's early so we'll see how things go.
On a positive note, the decision to have the main character be from a different region is working really well, the MC is from Hoenn and uses a pokemon from there, but is travelling in Kanto. So we get to witness a trainer exploring a region that is likely very familiar to us for the first time, getting that sweet nostalgia boost, while also giving the author plenty of room to world build without it seeming unecessary. The descriptions of the pokemon are pretty good, and the battles are energetic and strategic, even with the usual problems of early level battling mostly revolving around spamming the same move. The battles here invoke the spirit seen in the anime where the relationship between trainer and pokemon, and the creative use of their move sets can change the odds of a battle.
I don't often leave reviews, but I found this story relatively quickly after it was first posted, and am personally excited to see where it goes. Hopefully more people will see this and give this fic some attention!
