- IllthylianRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Considering this story seemed to be both written and 'completed' (though it feels more abandoned than truly concluded) within the span of a single month, there is a surprising amount of promise and interesting design in the story. Though the setting is never overtly described or gone into significant detail over, you get a clear picture of where and when this is all taking place purely by virtue of the dialogue and the manner in which characters address eachother. The central conflict, again though not really resolved, is intruiging at its basic level and compelling enough to make you want to see whether the characters succeed or fail.
Style and grammar are by far the weakest parts of this story, though neither are obstructive to the point of being unreadable. There is not much thought given to spacing of paragraphs or punctuation in dialogue, so it becomes a bit complicated to read in places where it feels scenes or characters all run together. These issues can be overlooked for the most part however in favor of the decently written characters and their quirks and personailities, which are a tad one-dimensional but definitely rounded enough to make them feel plausible. Single emotional goals for each that are pushed a bit rushedly into serving the plot, but again still believable enough that you aren't pulled clear out of the story by the convenience of it.
Even though this is a bit of a rougher work, I honestly would still recommend at least one read-through of it. It's quite short, and can be finished in an hour or so, and gives you this interesting little snippet of a larger world I wish the author would have continued writing or expanding on rather than simply ending it cold where they did. You won't get a satisfying conclusion, but you'll get a brief foray into a world that leaves you curious and gets your own creative juices flowing. That alone, I think, makes it worth a read.
