- Nea TankoRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5An early review so not much to go on so far and from the content so far a score of 4 stars would match my normal harsh scoring system (I haven't cried yet so no 5 stars :p) but RR scoring is a little inflated so a 4 would do a disservice this early in the novels run.
We have a little slice of American suburbia, some reasonably realistic teenagers, a relatively normal lead character and a pretty normal secret world with at least an acknowledgement that these things could never carry on without the people in power knowing.
Throw in an obligatory litrpg element (I'm personally neutral on LITRPG, don't need it in my stories don't mind it either) and you have the beginnings of a nice Urban fantasy.
So far so good. A nice start - StoicLRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5It has some interesting lore regarding the LitRPG elements. Mostly (so far) it's focused on the MC's average everyday life. Does a pretty good job making those not normal moment feel very not normal. MC's go to response is to freeze. I get it, mine too, but it can be a bit frustrating to read how she's not doing anything. I do fully expect that to change and her to start taking a proactive step into this weird situation she's in. I think (fingers crossed) that started happening in the last chapter I read. Which is why I say it's slow. Overall quite well written, characters feel distinct and like they all have their unquie motives. MC's unique power has potential narratively as something that is curse and a boon both. I believe the biggest question it's asking is "will she survive" and I'll admit I'm curious to know the answer. The mom does raise my narcissistic mother flag something fierce though, just fyi.
- SrodekRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Story had an interesting beginning, mysterious and little dark, then bam ... blue screen, ok I like systems, but all mystery gone to hell.
it still wouldn't be so bad if Mc wouldn't turn to be some freaking chosen princess (not really but not so far from it either), now I only wait for the arrival of the dark prince charming (has to be dangerous and powerfull).
Ok I'm a little mean here, but was really hoping for a dark story in modern days and got another litrpg, wish fulfillment Princess story (still waiting for dark prince)
Last and for me the most irritating thing is convoluted, repetitive and a way too long thoughts process of Mc. It's just tiring for me to read through a stream of unnecessarily long mostly meaningless thought processes of our Princess.
don't get me wrong it's still mostly a good story, but I just can't get through irritating factors - ManlorRoyal Road★★★ 3.0This is an interesting story.
Another review mentioned this feels like Buffy the Vampire slayer. There is some truth to it, in the sense that this story is a mix of teenage life, high school, and the secret hunt of the supernatural.
It takes 5 chapters for the system to kick in. There is a mystery to it. And the setting is intriguing so far.
The story is a little bit slow paced, meaning that so far, you shouldn't expect fights very often. But there is more to a story than just fighting, and I like what is building up so far. I'm always eager for the next chapter.
If you are looking for a modern setting, this is a very original story!
