- ZayricRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have just read the first two chapters, and what a joy to read they were. The author has a beautiful writing style. Every sentence is interwoven with delicately chosen vocabulary that evokes emotion and a visual insight into what is happening. The flow is effortless, like poetry, making it an absolute pleasure to read.
The story begins with a discussion between two strangers and evolves into what could potentially be a deep and lasting relationship. The pacing is perfect, with just enough to keep you intrigued while allowing the characters to develop naturally. It’s not rushed, and you can feel the subtle progression of their connection.
The conversations between Gale and Agreth feel real. They evoke emotions and give insights into a growing bond. Everything feels natural; not forced at all. I really enjoyed witnessing this and can’t help but guess at where the relationship is heading. The way their dynamic is built up is so compelling, and it’s easy to see how their individual personalities are starting to shape this connection.
The idea of the artifact is also interesting. I want to know more about it and how it could possibly affect others. Without giving any spoilers away, I feel like Gale needs Agreth, yet at the same time, Agreth also needs Gale. Their mutual reliance is interesting.
There are so many questions that I have at the moment. I can’t wait to read more.
Overall—great start to a story. Amazing character interactions. Beautifully written sentences. There are a few typos, but nothing a quick proofread can’t fix. Well worth a read. - EreschkigalRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5‘A New Kind of Magic’ is a story worth checking out for anyone looking for something slower-paced that focuses on character building and interpersonal relationships!
The story, as far as I've read now, is mainly centred around the characters Agreth and Gale and their relationship, which slowly develops and brings discoveries for both characters. Currently, there aren't many secrets or problems on the front lines. Instead, the author has focussed on creating an intriguing yet strong bond between the characters first.
There aren't many chapters out yet, but judging by the care put into this, there should be exciting interactions and plenty of spellbinding drama to come based on the blurb.
I think the strongest point of this story, so far, is the conversations between the characters and also the smaller interactions in between.
In addition, the author has chosen to describe environments and events as vividly as possible. Here, the writer chose a rather poetic style that strongly relies on purple prose. It gives the scenes a slightly magical touch and blends nicely with the narrative style. However, some sentences are very, very long as a result, which can make the text a little tiring to read.
What makes the long-winded sentences a little easier in some places are the characters themselves and therefore the focus of the whole thing. Agreth and Gale are both very compatible, so you could almost think they have known each other forever and understand how to deal with each other. You can see how the two of them try out new things, how they let one another lead to new discoveries and how their attraction grows with every conversation. The dialogues feel very natural and are well integrated into the surrounding events. The two of them are a pleasure to read together.
As a reader, you also get the chance to dive into the views of both sides - more so with Agreth than Gale at first - which further develops the characters and keeps you reading.

It differs significantly from what I usually read; from gory, edgy stories and philosophical texts, this one is a nice step off from that.
"If given the choice to be loved or feared, then choose to be feared."
Fuck you, Machiavelli. Being loved works too, to some extent. If being feared is what you simply go as far as to live by on, then one's innate nature to be recognized by others will and will deteriorate, leaving you emotionally drained, as we, humans, are inherently social creatures.
This story evokes that primal urge of what it means to be interacting with others. Albeit, in a more idealized sense.
And thus, from my rambling on a random topic, we shall continue.
The writing is generally good, though with some needing minor polish, but it doesn't detract from its playful beauty. Characters are likable, even Rune does a little teasing too. The setting is immersive, from the tavern to the festival, we get to feel that we're there.
Although there are some things that don't get their full marks on, like formatting, grammar, and stuff, but that's secondary to everything I've said.
Overall a good read if you want something lighter, or even somber at times, and escape to the escapades of Gale and Agreth. - LouigoasRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This is a fanfic about Gayle of Waterdeep, let's be honest. But a good one, one that's not afraid to explore things and leave the framework of the original media and story.
The story follows as written in the blurb: Gayle and Agreth, a wizard and a bard. The two of them exchange about their shared knowledge of magic, of their passion. One thing leads to another, the two discover that the way bards and wizards do magic can connect at an emotional level. And from there, the two start getting more intimate.
It has a good romance, but a bit too quick in any other way if magic wasn't involved.
It was honestly a bit hard to get into, not because of anything bad or outrageous. But because there are some text formatting issues. It does be thick, and really condensed. But it gets better over time, until chapter 3 where you can see a significant change from the previous two.
This is the state of the story as of writing this review. However, the author has mentioned that they will do an overhaul of the formatting sometime soon.
Therefore, I will change my review then. To be more accurate.
Style: The style in and of itself is really good. But the first chapter, as I've mentioned above was hard to get into. But let's focus on the positive!
" A New Kind of Magic" is really fluffy and flowery in its narration and description. It can be a bit of a detriment at times. But overall, it's really good: you can feel the time and energy the author invested in his writing just by seeing the way his prose is.
Story: The plot is interesting, and so is the exploration of how D&D's magic works via the interaction of the wizard and bard classes. But this is only an undercurrent to the romance burgeoning between Gayle and Agreth. There is some foreshadowing of things to come:
In the form of tarot cards being drawn for them. But It feels a bit weak as a plot device in my opinion.
But otherwise, from just five chapters at around 35k words in total. It's good. Only time will tell how it goes from
