Description

Remoulade deals with the dead all the time. After all, it’s part of her job—and honestly, it’s usually boring. But this time, it’s different. Confronted with a ghost who doesn’t seem to have a final resting place, she’s forced to work past the graveyard shift and muddle through the messy physical plane to figure out what went wrong and how to make it right.

This is a story of adventure, bickering, mayhem, and divine mistakes.

We open in a clerk's office at what appears to be a DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) type of place, where paperwork is done. Remoulade doesn't seem to be your normal clerk, but she's our guide at the start—then an entity appears, an entity who is dead (but doesn't know it). Fascinating twist!
The ghost, named Crispin, has trouble grasping who he is and it is revealed that he died early (and perhaps visciously) and as a result, he is leaking his identity from wounds in his soul. This is a problem. Identity seems key to anchoring who you are in the afterlife. I love this additional plot development and I think I like the character of Crispin more as a result too.
The writing here is beautifully done: evocative, a bit haunting, and engaging throughout—and as the mystery of the story develops, the intrigue builds. A great start to a novel—I'm excited to read more! : )

Not only is the premise and setup for this story unique and immediately captivating but it's very successful in creating an atmospheric narrative. Combining the eerie sense of dread involving the dead with the measured monotony of bureaucracy.  The two main characters share their perspectives on how the story is unraveling giving two slightly different angles to the same events.
All with a dash of dry humor and delightfully ridiculous names.
While this review cover only the early days yet, I highly recommend giving this one a read. It's quickly become a favorite.

The story is in its early stages yet however it's extremely promising. The characters a Remoulade, Crispin and Wyin-Gyatt (hope I spelled that right) are each unique in their own right.
The author also has a distinct voice, and narrative style that stands out. There's a touch of prose that seems to be woven throughout.
I honestly don't leave too many reviews and so I'm not sure if I'm doing a good job, but I'd encourage anyone who wants to try something funny unique and different to give this tale a chance.
