A League Apart - Journeys to the Beacons

Description
The only way from a Golden Age is down, and the planet of Anteia decended to the bottom. A 4000 year dark age of petty wars, and magical and technical stagnation left the continents in a state of decline. A prime situation for an ancient evil to reveal itself yet again.
To hold back the eventual tide of death and ruin, an enigmatic being calling itself the 'Cartographer' calls upon a man worlds apart as the vanguard that would usher in the heroes of legends to fight back against desolation itself.
Only, the man in question isn't a hero. No powers, no allies, and a defeatist attitude leaves Cameron Walker in a foreign land with people who can summon the elements, manipulate minds and bodies, and fly or turn invisible at will. Cameron has no apocalyptic magic, nor a body that can crush mountains.
He just has whatever willpower he has left.
Oh, and an arsenal of Earth's finest firearms and munitions.

- D.N. NewynRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A League Apart by ScriptOblique is an Adventure Fantasy that follows the story of defeatist Cameron Walker as he's given a second chance (sort of) by some kind of super god, and is sent to a world of magic with only some guns with him.
The best aspect of this book for me is the dialogues. They're real and raw, and with well-timed profanity. The main characters so far, Cameron and Dastilan, feel like characters from similar molds, and the distinction between them is how they talk. The author has the tendency to fall back on all caps for shouting which doesn't really vibe with me, but it's a stylistic choice that doesn't affect my experience.
The grammar is nearly flawless. I can only see a few very small errors, but absolutely nothing that takes away my immersion.
(Will be updating this review as I read on, so it makes an Advanced Review) - StgBriaRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0League Apart is sort of the inverse of the stories you see on this site. The writing is really well done. Grammar is on point and there is a discernable style here. And it takes the portal fantasy that's super popular and twists it, focusing on the aspects that are normally neglected or ignored. All that's really good.
The issue I find, and really the only issue, is the spirit it is written in. Right away it comes at you hard with that R-rated language. Now that's fine normally, but there is a question of the purpose. Is it being used to characterize someone? Is it that whip-smart Tarantino style of writing. Here, it starts out justified. I gave it the benefit of the doubt because you have these scummy thieves and that was good. But that vibe really keeps up.
Mean spirited is how I'd describe the work as a whole, which makes it a little unpleasant to read (hence the 4 not 5 stars). Now, this is really early on at Chapter 2, and I've seen stories like this work as things progress because it gives a place to grow and develop from.
