- Talo0Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have really enjoyed reading this all, for me I feel that the novel has a well explored world that has been used for great effect to compliment the cast of characters that slowly are built up (as well as the loss of them). They have quite a few characters but even the characters that are there to highlight the main cast throughout the story are given a life of their own. I like this novel mainly for the fact that the author has definitely got the right balance in how they've illustrated and utilised the world to compliment the cast whilst also balancing the many characters present in this novel. I congratulate the author for being able to do such a thing as it is quite difficult to do this. The story is also paced in a way that gives just enough time for readers to digest the events of past chapters and past chapters have kept being relevant thoroughly throughout the novel.
My only very tiny gripe is grammar oh so very occasionally throughout the story but I ought to suggest some edits myself as I have really found myself satisfied throughout the entirety of the novel as of reading Act 9.
On a last note.
By my troth, this tale is the very embodiment of modern literary excellence! - M.A. UrsineRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This series is fantastic, it follows an incompetent MC trying their best to get their bearings, thrown headfirst into what could be considered a generic good vs. evil plot with a nice dose of grimdark. The twist is, again, the MC is incompetent, dusting a mansion translates poorly to combat and general heroics.
The first two acts are thoroughly depressing, not because of what happens per-say, but from how little the MC can contribute to make a difference.
This makes re-reading acts 1&2 an absolute joy, as it lays the foundations to one of the best inner journeys i have ever seen in literature.
Initial reading, though, can be difficult, it’s hard to see Sophie struggle at the start. Personally I read it between other fictions until reaching act 3, where i proceeded to binge the rest. - Lemon snakeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Yes I know the tag is grim dark but still, you feel how powerless the MC is. Which is brutally realistic. She is like a unluck charm.
Appart from that, the story is very interesting, the side characters plays major roles or have major impacts, to the point of attachment. Which underline how well they're written.
A well developed world with deep lore that is explored through the story. There are letters or stories at the beginning of each chapters, that gives us bits and pieces about the lore.
The MC is thrown around as of now, and is going through adversity as if cursed by a divinity for just living. Sometimes, there are light of hope, some joy, but if you're the kind of reader who likes stories that goes with the overused boring trope of "and they married and loved eachother forever while the villain is suffering brain rot and get slain easily/ the issues are getting solved fast and it's a quest simulator" don't read. If you're avid for a story that explores, make you discover and don't hesitate to make it interesting, this is a must read.
Overall? erm... I'm very invested, and that show how good this is. Let's hope it won't be a bad ending kind of story I think I'm getting too attached to Sophie T^T - The Reality Next DoorRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5If you are looking for a powerful MC, if you are looking for one to shape destiny into another form. Then you might want to read another book as the MC is basically a push over, useless and fate has her way with Sophie as she gets the worst life possible. I don't mind, I loved reading so far, and I will continue reading!
Style: I enjoyed the reading style. However, some content feels a bit dragged out, which I loved because I am a stickler for dragged out detailed stuff, as long as it is consistent.
Grammar: I barely found any grammar issues at all, I was too sucked in with the story.
Story: Okay, minor spoilers, Sophie is a half elf, and she is basically a cosmic plaything, and with this story being a very slow burn. Once again, totally my taste, she is going to stay a cosmic plaything for a very long time. Until she probably snaps and becomes a person in her own right, hoping to see that develop gradually and not with a snap.
Characters: While my main focus is on Sophie, I love how the story actually does not revolve around her, she is just getting swung along. And despite how Eva is in the beginning, I am truly hoping these two get back together, but as good friends and who knows more.
If you enjoy slow burning stories, then this is a book you do not want to miss, now let me finish this up, so I can continue reading. - LisferRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5After reading for a while, I simply had to write a review. The story is an epic tale (not only in chapters which to me is a plus) but also in scope. That might not be readily apparent (though there are hints) because of the main character being an half-elf maidservant who gets rescued by the daughter of a duke from a forest she had been stranded in. The story begins with her at a very young age and then skips forward to young adulthood, where most of it takes place.
There is a lot of horror and tragedy in the story, so beware of that if that's a problem for you. The tags are not a joke.
There are some great things about this, namely -
The world building.
The characters.
The willingness to make meaningful sacrifices for the sake of the story.
The prose (though with a caveat- see not-so-good)
Each chapter is preceded by a quote from an in-fiction source, be it a historical tract or a newspaper clipping, giving more and more information on the world (though it's not needed to understand the story). I found it atmospheric. The world seems to make sense and that is all I want from it.
The characters are multi-dimensional and have their flaws and merits. Though sometimes that can be too much of a good thing (see the not-so-good later on). The second major character (the dukes daughter) is more of a 'classic' main character and would have been perhaps a better fit- but I have to admit less interesting and unique.
The sacrifices I won't go into them for spoiler reasons, but they fit the tone of the story well.
Now to the not-so-good-
There are some misspelled or completely wrong words interspersed in the narrative. It was not so bad that it really detracted, but sometimes it was jarring. (Disclaimer! Glasshouses and all- I'm not as good as the author in that regard!)
The prose, in general, is very good, and the style is easy to read and understand. I think there might be some auto-correction feature going on randomly exchanging words.
The main character. I don't think it co - TheGreatGazpachoRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5[Review Swap]
All the information provided is done very well, the verbiage is on point, and the prose is very descriptive. I found no grammatical issues; the narrative flow wasn't interrupted, and I was able to read without any problems.
The information is dense. It's clear a lot of thought and care was put into the world. Between the map and settlement/area descriptions and the quotes at the beginning of the chapters, the author enjoys world-building. While initially off-putting in the sense of trying to match certain cultural motivations with characters as they're introduced, I found myself going back and learning more about the world.
With all this being said, a lot of characters were introduced, and it was difficult to gleam who our main focal points would be on. I say this knowing full well that this review is being made very early in the story, and this qualm could be easily resolved in the immediate chapters.
Overall impressive. Wonderful care of world-building. Keep going - KenozaRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0After reading the first arc, it's basically a typical adventure story where it seem like the mc are in the right place and the right time where the evil plan are being carried out. I am expecting the second arc gonno be the same. The political and geographical situation is well planned although it's follow the same generel setting.
- ElgoreRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Great story if a bit dark at times, it's a slower paced adventure in a fantasy world filled with horror and tragedy. The MC in a cruel twist of fate is tossed headfirst into a period of upheaval and death and is trying her best to survive and fight back.
The style and grammar of the author are good. It's pleasant to read the chapters, easy to visualize what's going on and there aren't too many grammatical mistakes. The author does a good job keeping the reader invested in the story through a mix of tension, action and character interactions.
The story's interesting, and the characters are well defined and have meaningful interactions. The world is well thought out if a bit expansive and is introduced bit by bit through the plot. The characters are engaging, though the main focus is on Sophie and those close to her. I like the little snippets that the author puts at the beginning of each chapter as it shows that they put in that bit of extra time & effort to share with the reader a bit of additional lore of the world.
The update speed is excellent and the story doesn't decline in quality over time like many of the other, longer novels on this site.
I'm surprised this isn't more well known, though it is quite a bit different than the standard bread and butter power fantasy litrpgs RR's main audience reads. I'm quite thankful for novels like these that are like a breath of fresh air.
I highly recommend giving it a try. - RadaghastRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Whats not on the tags?
- It's VERY slow. Tens of chapters in, and not short chapters, the MC has zero ability and very little agency as things just happen to her. While the story develops around the MC. She herself does not improve and in many cases places herself in mortal peril like failing to be stealthy in dangerous situations. Many times you will realize that the girl is very stupid and this MC is staying at level 0 for a LONG time. There are few interesting characters around the MC but not enough to keep me interested to binge read.
- The world building is decent.
-The "real" threat is not apparent. Keeps you guessing
- There are Isekais
- As of 6/2/2023 very few grammar and spelling mistakes.
- You might get bored of many redundant paragraphs.
- Theres a nice map! - smartiesbabRoyal Road★★★ 2.5The theme of the book seems to be fine.
The plot idea is good, an isekai skipping the whole 'oh I'm a special child and I have to pretend and hide in a childish way for being a supposed adult ', phase, being a major plus. Otherwise a pretty generic world, the evil to be fought back is boringly simple, being mindless evil for the sake of being evil. There are antagonists to outweigh the simplicity, but it still is rather boring. It's fine. The world building is fine. The style is generic but there's nothing inherently wrong with it. It's fine. No grammatical errors beyond the ordinary. My largest gripe comes with the massive inconsistencies in characters, being general inconsistency and unexplained character development or competence. It sort of seems as if the author had a vision in mind, and completed that vision, instead of building characters and letting them interact. The displayed maturity of all characters fluctuate wildly. A character introduced as gruff, later says 'Hah, you got it person' unironically. One of the protagonists who has displayed child-level maturity, is suddenly capable of unhesitating violence, characters have unexplained jumps or just in general unexplained competence.
In conclusion, there's nothing major that is'wtf is this' bad, there's just a lot of small things adding up to an unimpressive whole.
