- LilyOfTheWillametteValleyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I found the philosophical and technological questions that this story raised fascinating and relevant to the modern day. I appreciated the ending, and
Style: The story was generally easy to read, although the prose could be a bit heavy-handed at times. I liked the idea of writing part of the story in the form of logs recorded on a blackberry. However, despite the huge variation in narrators (only some of which were humans) and theoretical formats of narration, all the chapters were written in the same style, which undercut the idea that the stories were coming from diverse sources for me.
Story: I really enjoyed the premise of the story, and the careful way that the setting was explained to the audience. Showing the story from multiple viewpoints added a complexity that I appreciated. My one critique was that the story lacked subtly--naming the overlord "The Capitalist" and the people that enforced their regime "SS" (what was that supposed to be short for?) felt too obvious to me--but this was a minor critique.
Grammar: There were very few grammar mistakes.
Character: while I understand that the story's format didn't allow for much character development, I didn't get much sense of a unique character voice for most of the characters (with the exception of the character in the second chapter). That being said, I enjoyed being able to see the events of the story from many different points of view--it added a complexity to the plot that I don't usually see from such short stories. - VVVVVVRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There's sufficient connections between the different chapters and a satisfying ending that makes the anthology feel like a complete package. Each stub paints a fate, a snapshot in this digitized world. Each with their unique voice and views to present to the reader..
If you are looking for an artsy, brain engaging sci-fi story (whatever that means) this would be it.
A great piece of fiction. - LunaSeaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Each chapter of the story carries entire books in just a few words. I have a few favorite lines (but won’t post in review & spoil it) that made me pause as I tried to understand both what the author was thinking, what the author wanted to convey, and how I can apply it to myself.
(It's almost like a commentary disguised as fiction, or maybe I'm thinking too much?)
This is definitely a work that I’ll return to now and then to experience at different stages of life.
