A fine octet of legs

Description
When you go to sleep, you expect to wake up with the same number of legs as you went to bed with. This is not generally seen as a big deal. In fact, many people take this for granted.Apparently, however, this was a luxury that Rita was not going to have access to anymore. Somehow equipped with four times the number of legs she’s used to, she is going to need to learn to learn to walk pretty damned quick if she wants to survive in the post-apocalyptic hellscape outside her apartment that she was almost certain wasn't there yesterday.
Right, and stay sane. Which, judging from how pushy her inner voice was becoming, might just be the biggest challenge of all…

- VerdantHeraldRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0She is probably one of the mobs in a fantasy world that recycles post-apocalyptic realities or something.
The protagonist(s) is an arachnae (think spider-centaur) and wake up in the post-apocalypse to an unpaid electrical bill, a dead phone and bad case of xenophobia.
Tone is light without being infantilizing, the writing is good, the adventure is novel and not just a rehash of a tutorial, if you like non-human fiction this is worth checking out. (It's so far been exactly what it looks like, which I like, but if you don't like it from the start I doubt you'll change your mind much) - Zenopath (AEV)Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The tone and setting sort of reminds me of Steven Kings Dark Tower series where post apocalypse and magic blend together. There's something intriguing and scary going on, but the author knows not to spoil things by explaining too much. You become invested in learning more just as you become invested in the characters. Very creative and unique, was quite sad when I realised I'd reached the end of written chapters. Highly recommended if you are looking for highly creative and original world building.
- AxeliosRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've really been enjoying this story. It's a great mix of a little light body horror and lot of humour and character building. The world is a really interesting design, and some of the major events and revelations of the main character were very engaging! I'm intentionally being vague to avoid spoilers ;). I will be following this story for a good while. The latest developments are intriguing.
- RedPineRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Now that the story is 59 chapters in, I can update my review to remove the "early review" disclaimer. This is one of the stories I always devour the moment it's released, so you can assume this review is up to date unless I edit it to say otherwise.
First order of business, the main cast passes the "not evil" test. Most of them would even qualify as "good"... but definitions of "good" vary wildly among the party, there is pragmatic survival to worry about, mistakes happen, so on and so forth, just like real life.
In any case, oopsies and drama notwithstanding, these aren't characters you will regret rooting for.
The first story arc is complete, which ends at chapter ~43. If you aren't a fan of cliffs, you can read up until that point then wait a few months for the next arc to finish. That said, you'll probably like the story enough that the cliffs are worth it.
I'd love to offer some constructive criticism, but I honestly can't think of any - aside from the occasional grammer error, typo, etc., but I'd rather get more chapters faster than wait on proofreading.
Overall: Unique, memorable, and enjoyable. This isn't a story I'm going to forget about. Even visually - which is very impressive for a written work.
Style: Prose is solid, pacing is solid. The author does a good job of cycling through the phases of exploration, buildup, climax, resolution, and plateaus, without overcommitting any given phase of a story past it's welcome.
Story: Top notch. It's about people being people, when you get down to it. Everyone has a history, personality, and at least some semblance of a goal in life. This is the kind of story that is written by the characters, not the author.
Grammer: Could use an editing pass or two if the author chooses to go commercial someday, but for now I'm more than happy to overlook the occasional grammer error or typo in exchange for chapters getting done faster.
The errors are fairly jarring, but they are also rare, and I never have trouble f - RinoZRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An excellent and intruiging start to what appears to be a well thought out and imaginative world.
I always enjoy a good reborn as a monster story, as should we all, and this fits the bill so far. The character's unbalanced mental state is well portrayed and I'll be interested to see how the story develops as we learn more about the setting alongside her.
Just wish there was a couple less legs. - Zodiac36GoldRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I will start this Review by saying that I am deeply biased because I like spiders and because I'm writing a story about an arachne. I will also follow that statement by saying I don't give a flying fu*k about those details and that this story deserves much more attention than what it's gotten.
Now: Rita is a girl like any other, until one day she goes to sleep and, waking up the next morning, she no longer is a girl like any other. Or a human, for that matter. Enter the spider! She's become an arachne, even though that's not what they call her in the story. Also, there's a voice in her head that's really bossy but really is just working overtime trying to keep her alive. Yes, because the world she'd woken up in is post apocalyptic! Talk about shitty mornings.
Now, this beginning alone would make the story worth reading, but then the secondary characters are introduced, and that opens up an whole new world, making the story that much more interesting, if that was possible.
But, apparently, it is, because the worldbuilding in this story is top notch. One can clearly see that there was a great amount of care put in everything, from the simpler geographical side of the world, to the much deeper and more complex cultural side of an entire society. It is, to put it simply, great!
Grammar is fine, only a few typos here and there, nothing to say about it.
And for all the rest, as stated, it is top notch, it's gained the seal of approval!
So, if you like monsters that seem to have come out a child's nightmare-inspired mad drawings and people who seem to have a bad habit to stay alive when they shouldn't, go ahead and read this story. It's absolutely worth your time! - TheMagicDragon7Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Weak starts. They're a common occurrence on this site and a great shame that leave many stories buried and in need of people who can plant their feet in the ground and start digging. It's not egregious here. Not at all, and I find the switch in genres somewhat hilarious. In a way, the weakness is only relative to the rest of the story. The worldbuilding is batshit crazy in the best way. Many chapters start or end with notes about how many times he rewrote. It shows. Within the span of 10 chapters, you could be hit with not one, not two, but three absolute emotional haymakers of scenes, one of which for a new character in a new setting after only a few chapters to warm the audience up to them. The author throws an honest to god onslaught at our protagonist Rita, introduces a second protagonist to throw an onslaught at them, and then somehow manages to put it all together in some ridiculous clusterfudge where everyone is at everyone's throats except the protagonists and their tight knit individual groups and then throws some more as the dust starts to clear. It's insanity and I (am starting to get annoyed by it, gib Rita break!) am absolutely loving it! (Like... my god, near the end there, MC gets ambushed, then third partied, both are handled, original ambusher gets ambushed before said new ambusher goes for MC, then MC gets third partied again. Wtf.) Virtually every character, aside from Rita and Bob, is either straight evil or walks the line between good and evil, though still leaning towards evil honestly, in endlessly unique and interesting ways. Grailmane is the holy grail of functional settings that both don't depress the reader and contain nothing but terrible beings that are somehow depicted in the full range of (dis)likeability and then have that likeability turned around on a dime. Loose ends are handled without fail and the story is cohesive and well orchestrated. You know you've done well when I can binge your story and feel genuinely empty to see that th
- prissiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First, many people seem disappointed that the MC is not true to her form, i.e. is not a villain. Personally, I can live with her. (The world is broken enough already.) But what makes this story strong are the many side characters and their stories which contribute to the main story. By them, the world gets much more colourful than I had initially expected.
While the start is not really slow, the later in the story and the more we leave MC's head, the better it gets for me. - mofumofuRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I binged all the released chapters over a long weekend and enjoyed every minute of it. Character and world detailing is *chef's kiss*. I have a short attention span but this kept me hooked the entire time, in no small part thanks to the author's clever and witty writing. Rabid Muskrat, you are my new hero. Thank you for this amazing story.
