- D.M. Rhodes (Razzmatazz)Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Wow. Okay. Wow. I started reading this in the context of a review swap, but I ended up binging 16 chapters at once haha. As of this review there are 37 chapters available. But I feel I have a really good grip on the story and writing at this point.
So, where do I start?
The story follows our protagonist, a young man named Victor Miller who opts to leave his home town to join a Civil Defense guild in the neighboring city. Inside this guild he manages to adapt to his new life fairly successfully, especially due to not only a little lucky happenstance, but also because of the two new friends he makes there; one of them being one of his older childhood friends his there by happenstance as well. We follow the daily guild life of Victor and his friends as they train, live life but also end up going on several dangerous outings.
However in the background is a rekindling of an old war between dragons and their cultist followers versus the rest of the imperial forces. Pretty suddenly an old violence escalates as strange forces shift in the shadows, conspiring and plotting with political and militaristic intrigue. Victor and his friends are caught in the midst of this whole scenario, leading to chaos, emotional turmoil and death.
There are many twists and turns in this story, many plot hooks that keep you clicking to the next page. The author is great at that.
I had no issues with the grammar or writing and found it smooth and to have a strong flow.
We often shift perspective, seeing different scenes from the different factions play out. It’s always interesting to see how the dialogue from one conversation and event plays into the perspective of another faction’s character a few chapters later.
My favorite part of the story though is the dynamic between the main trio. There’s a really strong, believable chemistry here that I feel works very well. It isn’t ham-fisted like a lot of relationship work on this site. It’s very good writing all in all.
I'm not usually a dragons guy, - Terran AscensionRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A truly well written piece for a talented up and coming writer, Draconic Odyssey is imaginative and captivating enough to keep you binge reading for hours on end. The story has all you want from a fantasy settings including dragons so what more could anyone possibly want? I would purchase this if it ever got printed and sold in stores and I recommend you should too for it can give J.R Martin a go for his money
- D.N. NewynRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A Draconic Odyssey by Gyeig is just as the name suggests--expect lots of dragons, political intrigue, and war. The tricky (and very interesting thing) about this story is that reader is thrown off-balance trying to figure out who the bad guy actually is. We are introduced to humans first, with soldiers like Victor and William who seems innocent, oblivion to the plans of the imperial, and care more about their friends and family. Then we have enigmatic figures like guildmaster Jonathan who orders shady stuff. And we have the Imperial that bans Draconism and erasing all of its trace for some reason. People comes from all walks of life, with varying ideals and values, which makes for a diverse and profound cast.
The world-building is another commendable aspect due to how meticulous it is. Sometimes it drags on and leans a bit to the 'telling' side of things, but overall it's well done. I love the history about Draconism told through the backstory of the characters and conversations of the nobles. I feel like the humans are more fleshed out than the dragons, so that took half a point of character score for me.
All in all, a good story with lots of potential. I expect more greatness from this author in the future! - Avery LightRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0So, we got a story of dragons. The setting so far is the dragons and their human allies were defeated by the empire, human empire (I think). Whether the empire is evil or not I don't know yet but I think this is not a story where good and evil are so clear-cut. The empire invaded the dragons home after all so the dragons retaliated, by gutting and barbequing imperials. Who is right and who is wrong? Not so easy to tell.
Style is good, easy to read. The words are rich and flow nicely. The scenes are written quite descriptive so easy to imagine. A bit too detailed perhaps but it's not a minus
Grammar is good, just a few typos and not the kind that stabs your eye.
Story is good, we got a nice world building here. Since the story is split between a human MC and another at the dragon's side, the story is progressing a bit slow and yet there's much going on for both sides.
Characters are nicely depicted with their own set of personalities, the dragons are bit feral but fit in the grand telling of the story.
My only complaint is the dragons are too vulnerable, they can be brought down by arrows and swords. I expected more from fire breathing flying machine of death but maybe it's only my bias.
Overall the author has written a nice story and it got potential.
Rev at chapter 13 - KayTeaRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0From where the story begins it starts off really slow, and I mean kinda boring as the first couple chapters is Victor traveling, talking and trying to start up his life as a member of a Defense guild. Nothing really too much about the tension or what may be coming in the future, its just Victor doing Victor things. Now I would like to say the setting of this book is very "western fantasy" So if you just want a cup of dragons and knights then this would be your book.
I can say personally Gyeig's style leans heavily into telling a lot, and its honestly a bother as there's a lot of it going on especially when its mixed into the worldbuilding. Some may find it annoying to read while others won't mind as much.
I did enjoy the groundedness of the story, there isn't a lot of ridiciolous anime, harem-esque stuff that infests a lot of stories around here. It feels like I'm picking up a book out of B&N with the fresh book smell still on it and I won't be blasted by some weird stuff. The story has characters and factions with their own agenda behind the scenes meanwhile Victor is just trying to hang out with the boys and be a good Civil Defense guy.
The grammar is passable and nothing to say here.
I think all-in-all the story is very readable and obviously has the author's effort written on it to remind you that he cares about the experience of the reader for his story, there's nothing super-terrible about this story and even has its moments you'd go for the next page. - Vera Anne WolfeRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Overall Score: 4/5 I would start by saying the story has potential, but overall it felt very PG-13. The plot was straight forward pretty much from the get-go. Victor, who grew up without his father, leaves home to join a guild. A short drunken bar fight. A message delivery. Guild life is pretty mundane. But what Victor doesn’t know is that things are about to get worse as the war between the local principalities and the cult of dragons and those who worship them, is about to implode. If there is one unique element of his writing I did enjoy it was the way he conveyed different dialects in the dialogue. Not easy to do. Not something I’m confident in doing at all, but I think he did well there.
Style Score: 3.5/5 The author does a commendable job presenting the story, however, he does rely on “telling” more than “showing” which presented a few miss opportunities in making parts of this story memorable. Entering the guildhall, the bar fight, Will getting drunk and becoming more outspoken come to mind.
The author also chooses to combine two people's dialogue in paragraphs which at times somewhat disrupts the read. While it makes sense when dealing with two short sentences. It didn’t in other areas where they would have stood just fine as separate paragraphs.
There were a few areas where the writing, or what the author was trying to convey, also didn’t make sense, which is marked in my comments.
The author also had a habit of tipping his hand on events to come. We were told the soldiers were bad before Victor got in a carriage with one and had that awkwardly unpleasant conversation. We are told at the end of chapter 3 of the conflict to come, which we can later glean for ourselves in chapter 4.
Story Score: 4/5 Any story that involves dragons normally gets my fantasy blood roaring. But here dragons just feel like people who are dragons. Becoming a dragon in and of itself is also easy, albeit painful, and a reward to humans who worship Dragons and their Divine god despite
