A Curse of White and Red
Community Rating
Description
A vicious, deadly curse is running rampant across the world of Ashlokh, and governments across the world repeatedly abduct people from other worlds to keep the population up. For a group of nerds at an anime convention on Earth, it's their unlucky day. They suddenly find themselves in a world where they're the only humans and what's left of society is barely holding it together.
It was the year 2058 on Earth and society has barely progressed at all in decades, but the technology of Ashlokh was worse than that, and has actually regressed by several decades. Worst of all, the humans turn out to be incredibly weak compared to everyone else. With no way home and the threat of imminent death always looming over their heads, they have no choice but to begin their struggle.

- RznRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5The setting itself is a bit forced to account for the nanites, but otherwise the idea of a bunch of people getting kidnapped and taken to another world is pretty normal. While not portal fantasy or traditional isekai, there is a power system and aliens. The story unfolds with a lot of character back and forth, and Ivy is trans. Now, the story noted that Ivy is like Ivory and makes jokes about being 'white' physically and culturally, but Ivy is a plant and is green. Not sure why that connection was not put forward as it would spare from some poor-taste jokes. The plot itself is not bad, though it does sort of move slow and never really gets into the different species or the setting in any depth. The transformation of Ivy and the nature of the Cursed Ones should have had more of a focus than the often-shallow dialogue between the other characters.
All in all it is not a bad story, but one with some editing could be a lot stronger. The core ideas are good, and while the nature of power and longevity and other aspects fell away, the stranger in a strange land might have been a better focus and allegory before revealing Ivy coming out. This was good though. - HyenasRoyal Road★★ 2.0It started out OK-ish and went down hill from there. By the end, it seemed like the author just gave up. I do give them credit for realizing they backed themselves into a corner and cutting the story rather than leaving us dangling. SO many Royal Road stories stop when they are just getting really interesting and we never know how they end.
I found this one had far too much telling and not showing. It had some negative emotions but made scenes that should have been exciting dull. They were incidentals. Well, better luck next time for the author. Maybe they can re-do this one when they get some more experience.
